The Right Time to Start
You've read all the books and you've watched all the videos - including mine. You know about the importance of proactively structuring your team, finding the right people, building the right culture, executing with discipline, assessing your talent, coaching your talent, and maybe even hiring a coach to guide you through all of this. But you can't get started yet.
Why can't you get started? I'm down two people on my leadership team and I need to wait until I fill those positions. After all, shouldn't they be on board when I get all this started? Things are crazy busy right now, so I need to wait until things calm down a bit. I need to put some better processes in place, or none of this will work. Revenue is down, and I can't afford to make these changes now - but as soon as things turn around, I'll get started. There's always an excuse to wait before you get started to create what I call a breakthrough leadership team, to put a growth framework in place. But let's look at each one of these reasons to wait:
● I’m down two people, and I need to wait until you fill those positions. If you fill those positions the way you always have, you'll wind up exactly where you are now. The right time to put a better process in place to find A players is now.
● Things are crazy busy right now, so I need to wait until things calm down a bit. Things will stay chaotic until you put better execution disciplines in place. The time to do this is now.
● I need to put some better processes in place, or none of this will work. Better processes with the wrong people and an unhealthy culture are not going to solve your problems. The time to put the right growth framework in place is now.
● Revenue is down and I can't afford to make these changes now, but as soon as things turn around, I'll get started. That's like saying you can't spend the time to fix things until they're already fixed.
The time to proactively structure your leadership team for growth is now. The time to put better processes in place to find A players is now. The time to build the right culture is now. The time to improve your ability to assess, coach, and develop your talent is now. The time to hire a coach to help guide you through all of this, to put a growth framework in place, to build a breakthrough leadership team, is now.
