What if there was no right decision?

I was at dinner recently and was seated next to another speaker who was telling me she once had the chance to start a professional singing career.

Then, she got some advice that made her realize it would be incredibly hard to make a good living from it. So, she made the decision to abandon that career and start a new one as a coach.

She was now really thankful for making the right decision; after all, she wouldn't have the successful coaching career she has now.

Happy ending, right?

But how did she know that she wouldn't be a massively successful professional singer right now? She didn’t.

Now I’m not saying she should have pursued professional singing. I have no idea which way it could have gone. But it makes me wonder…

Regardless of the fork in the road she chose, as long as she executed the hell out of that decision and learned along the way, would’ve led to a successful outcome.

We just need to make a decision, not the perfect decision.

It’s when we DON’T make a decision, when we agonize and analyze for six months, that we  miss opportunities, and our chance to live a more fulfilling life.

I'm not saying that there aren't some obvious right and wrong decisions. But we don't struggle over those.

We struggle over the ones where we're 40% or 60% sure what to do. So we analyze the hell out of it.

My advice: Make a decision, and then execute the hell out of it.

Then keep your eyes open to what’s working, what’s not working, and be willing to shift course along the way.

Fun fact: the word DECIDE comes from the latin ‘decidere’, which literally means ‘cut off’.

When making a decision, you cut yourself off from worrying about other decisions you could have made. It’s simple, execute and adjust.

Your mindset here is very important, because you can easily get discouraged along the way. So don’t forget to do the things that support you – meditation, gratitude, visualization, whatever works for you.

Surround yourself with the right people that encourage you, that pat you on the back, or kick you in the ass when you need it.

Then, no matter what decision you make…it’s going to be right.

What’s a decision you’ve been struggling with for too long? What can you do about it today?
